Glen Valez Workshop – "Hands Dancing: The World of Frame Drumming"

Sunday, March 16, 1:00 – 3:00 PM

Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring
$35 advance/$40 door

Join us for a special workshop with master frame drummer Glen Valez. A member of the Paul Winter Consort (1983-1998) and Steve Reich & Musicians (1972-1987), Valez has recorded with artists ranging from Pat Metheny to Suzanne Vega, and released 10 recordings and instructional videos under his own name. Transcending tambourine techniques, Glen presents his own synthesis of hand drumming styles from Brazil, South India, Central Asia, and the Arabic world. The hands-on workshop will include an introduction to the family of frame drums; demonstration of rhythmic concepts using voice and body movement; explanation and performance of overtone singing; solos using classical and hybrid techniques on the Egyptian rig, Irish bodhran, and Central Asian gaval; and work with polymetric material using rattles and shakers. This master class is designed for intermediate drummers, but all levels are welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring their own frame drums, but Glen will have drums available for use during the workshop as well as drums available for purchase.
