The allure is
undeniable. Seven talented, attractive women breathe renewed
life into the rich texts of medieval songs and poetry. Their hauntingly
beautiful music captures the imagination and devotion of modern
audiences.
They are the Mediaeval Baebes, and in ten years they
have placed three of
their albums at the top of the UK classical charts and performed before
standing room only audiences in the UK and United States.
Combining
passion for their music with an intelligent sense of humour, The Baebes
appeal extends to a wide range of audiences. They defy any traditional
classification, and their audience is made up of fans from teens to
seniors. Lovers of classical, folk, Celtic, pop and rock music all
listen to the Baebes. Their music is in turns soothing and
electrifying. Founding member Katharine Blake is also
the music director and lead composer and arranger for the band. Born in
London, she was classically trained at the Purcell School of Music and
Richmond College. Through her work with the Baebes, Katharine has
enabled audiences to discover largely unknown medieval texts by making
them accessible and vital in the modern age. The medieval themes of
nature, the life cycle, love, and longing are as relevant in 2007 as
they were in 1407.
